MANGANITE

Ilfeld, Harz Mountains, Germany

11 x 8 x 9 cm

A truly, world-class specimen of manganite from the classic German manganese deposit at Ilfeld.  The mine is located 6 kilometers northwest of the town of Ilfeld which is set picturesquely in one of the most beautiful valleys of the Southern Harz region, the Ilfelder Tal valley.     Dr. Peter Bancroft, in his wonderful book entitled Gem & Crystal Treasures (1984), wrote the following: “Whenever an exceptionally well crystallized manganite specimen is displayed, its place of origin proves to be Ilfeld … No other locality has produced crystals of such luster, perfection, and size.  Manganite is synonymous with Ilfeld.”  The manganite crystals occur within mineralized veins which cut through a hornblende porphyry.

The specimen is a very attractive hummocky plate of lustrous, black, pseudo-orthorhombic crystals of the prismatic form having pinacoid terminations.   This specimen has exceptional “architecture” with a knob of manganite crystals rising-up from the more typical flat plate of crystals.  This small cabinet specimen would be a treasured piece in any mineral collection.
