Keweenaw County
Michigan
Size: Small Cabinet
The world’s finest specimens of native copper have been discovered in the mines of the Keweenaw peninsula which is situated at the most northern part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Mining began in these rich copper/silver deposits in the mid-1800’s. Commercial copper mining in the district significantly declined after the Great Depression of the 1930’s and effectively ended in the mid-1980’s.
This specimen is from the Central Mine, one of the most prolific and profitable of mines on the Keweenaw Peninsula, over 51 million pounds of copper were taken from the Central. The mine opened in 1855 and copper production ended at the Central Mine in 1898. This copper specimen has SUPER aesthetics and is among the finest coppers we have handled in the past decade. The individual tetrahexahedral crystals making up this specimen are HUGE and the specimen has a wonderful, rich patina. This fantastic specimen was formerly in the collections of Peter H. Farquhar and Donald K. Olson.
If you are looking to add a top-quality native copper specimen to your collection this piece is definitely worth consideration.
