Emeralds have been prized jewels since the beginings of recorded history. The rich green color, along with the hardness of the stone made them precious stones of the ruling class of many early civilizations. They have even been attributed with the power of increasing intelligence, protecting marriages, and enableing the possesor with powers of prediction!
All that aside, they are beautiful stones. Matrix emerald specimens from Colombia have always been a centerpiece of mineral collections (right next to rhodochrosite!). This specimen from the Chivor mine is a fine example. The single 4.2 cm crystal has good color and luster, along with the gemmy translucency that collectors want. The emerald crystal is nicely nested on a calcite coated matrix. The calcite crystals are milky white, with good luster too.
The Chivor mine is a privately owned mine, unlike Muzo and Coscuez, which are government owned. Chivor is often a term given to emeralds which exhibit a rich green color.
This specimen comes mounted on a custom acrylic base with a locality label. It would make an excellent addition to any mineral collection!
